Just in time for the Netflix series, my Kindle app granted me a free read of Margaret Atwood’s suspenseful tale. The entire time, I had no idea what was going on, but this is simply illustrative of how the main character (who doesn’t even have a real name) has no idea what is going on either. The same way she holds on and hopes for an answer, so do you.

Our main character is named Offred because she is “of Fred”. In a world dominated by men, concubines are named after whom they belong to.  The handmaid tells us of a society in which the status and purpose of women is based on their ability to give birth.  The descriptions in the book leave you wide-eyed and gasping as we learn, bit by bit, what in the world happened and happens to these women after they were stripped of their independence for supposed good reason.

If you have a chance to grab this book before you watch the movie, I strongly recommend it — especially in a time where society is discussing women/gender rights so often…
